At St. Mary’s School, we provide a high-quality bilingual education. During the Early Childhood Education stage, 70% of classes are taught in English, while in Primary Education, this percentage adjusts to 45%. From Primary Education onwards, our students can also choose a second foreign language, such as French, German, or Portuguese. These languages are taught by native-speaking teachers to ensure complete linguistic and cultural immersion.
Starting in 3rd grade of Primary Education, students begin the official certification process with Cambridge exams, beginning with Flyers (A2), progressing to PET (B1) in 6th grade, FCE (B2) in the early years of Secondary Education, and achieving CAE (C1) between the second cycle of Secondary and the first year of Baccalaureate. This progression aligns with the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
In addition to language learning, St. Mary’s School is committed to providing education that encompasses both the academic and personal development of its students. Our Spanish-English bilingual approach not only prepares our students for the challenges of a globalized world but also fosters the development of critical cognitive skills. From a neuroscientific perspective, it is well-documented that learning more than one language enhances cognitive flexibility, stimulates problem-solving abilities, and boosts critical thinking and creativity.
We equip our students with the linguistic and cognitive tools they need to excel in any international environment, promoting adaptability, innovation, and success.
B incluilingual teaching, as well as the third language, must be a student-centred teaching, based on classroom activities that are participatory and collaborative, making continuous use of ICTs. It must be a learning focused on processes and tasks. For this, in addition to teaching English as a language, having four hours a week, the Bilingual plan goes further: the subjects of Knowledge of the Environment, Art, Music, Entrepreneurship, Chess, Physical Education and Emotional Intelligence are also taught in English (from now on L2 second language). In this way the L2 is used to learning at the same time that as communicating.
As part of our commitment to international education, St. Mary’s School actively participates in exchange and linguistic immersion programs, offering students valuable experiences in different cultures.
As an accredited Erasmus program center, we provide our students with the opportunity to participate in exchanges across various European countries. This strengthens their global education and fosters the acquisition of intercultural and multilingual competencies. These immersion programs allow our students to experience education in an international setting, broadening their horizons and preparing them for a successful professional and personal future in an interconnected world.
Also our international projects of cultural exchange and linguistic immersion programs include:
-
UK: From the fifth year of primary, students can participate in a linguistic immersion program in the United Kingdom, from one week to a complete year abroad.
-
France: One week student exchange program in Nantes.
-
Canada: From the second year of Secondary students can study in Canada from a term to a complete year abroad.
-
